The most commonly used grinding medium is ball medium and rod medium, in some cases, the round table, column ball, short round rod and other irregular shape, this is called special-shaped medium.  The material of grinding medium is mostly cast iron or alloy processed specially, followed by ceramics, alumina, etc.  Gravel grinding medium gravel has nearly sphere, ellipsoid, egg shape (pebble) and so on, is specially made from ore or rock.

The grinding medium of metal material should be wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, with enough strength and hardness, not easy to crack in the work, and can still roughly retain the original shape after wear.  The consumption of metal ball media (the amount of media consumed by crushing 1T materials, kg/t) and ball breakage rate (different sizes of balls under the action of external forces, the fraction of the amount of broken test ball, %) is the main index to measure its quality.  For bar media, it is required not to bend and break.  In grinding production, the most important factor to improve the efficiency of the mill is to bring the function of grinding medium into full play.
