As for the shape of the grinding medium of the sand mill, because it is operated at high speed, almost all agree that spherical or close to spherical is the best.  Because the grinding effect of the sand mill is still the impact and shear force, so if the density of the grinding medium is a little bigger, then the same size of the grinding medium, the two forces will be bigger, the grinding effect will be better.  

The amount of grinding medium of the sand mill is related to the viscosity of the slurry to be grinded and the temperature of the slurry, so the amount of grinding medium must be considered.  The general principle is that when the viscosity of slurry is large, the amount of grinding medium should be less, and when the viscosity is small, the amount of grinding medium can be a little more.
